The season of holiday parties, family portraits and festivities is upon us! No doubt you have at least one holiday event left on your calendar this year. You’ll want to look your festive best, and there’s no better way to do that than by adding a bit of sparkle to your makeup look. Here are five no fail ways to add a bit of glitter, sparkle, and shimmer to your makeup for the end of this holiday month, from work cocktail parties and family gatherings, all the way to toasting on New Year’s Eve.
1. Shimmery Eye Shadow
The easiest way to upgrade your eyes is with a shimmery eye shadow. Apply your makeup as usual but add a matching color in a shimmer formula on top. Use your shadow brush from our new 6 Piece Day to Night brush set with a bit of water on it and apply your shimmer color right on top. We love a brown or grey smoky eye with this look – the shimmer adds an unexpected effect. Try Stila’s individual shimmering pots of shadow. Want to go all out? Add glitter eyeliner. Try Hard Candy Walk the Line Eye Liner in sparkle grey or sparkle black to amp up your look.
Beauty gurus swear by illuminator to give blush an added sheen and make skin appear more luminous. To apply, use a flat brush, like our buffing brush, and add illuminator to the top parts of your cheeks, the tip of the nose, and right above the brow bone (similar to where you would apply bronzer). You can also apply it to the features you want to pop out. Beauty consultants at Sephora suggest using a tapping motion to get the best results. Try NARS Illuminator in Laguna, a brown with golden shimmer.
3. Sparkly Lip Gloss
Hands down, the easiest way to add sparkle to a look is with lip gloss. Wear a sparkle lip gloss by itself or slick one on top of lipstick for a layered effect with extra oomph. Almost every makeup line has a sparkling gloss, so check your favorite brand, or try Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Shiny Kiss Flavored Gloss in Mocktail Hour.
4. Glitter Nail Polish
Make your inner child happy with glitter on your nails! Real Simple Magazine’s “The Grown-Up’s Guide to Glitter” points out that glitter and flecks stuck in clear gel can look sophomoric or even dirty, so opt for a tone on tone glitter like a gold, bronze, or red. These colors will look sophisticated and are completely wearable at the office. Try Butter London’s West End Wonderland a classic gold and glitter color. Don’t have time for a manicure? Use Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips in Glitz Blitz.
5. Shimmer Body Powder
If you’re planning on wearing a strapless or low neck line, dust yourself with a subtle shimmer powder. Use your kabuki brush, pick up some powder, tap off the excess, and dust it on your collarbones. Try Victoria’s Secret Dust-up Kissable Body Shimmer, available in three different subtle colors. You can also use a shimmer infused lotion to add some luminescence to your skin. Try Bath and Body Work’s Select a Shimmer, it comes with a handy dial to adjust the amount of lotion and shimmer that comes out of each pump.
