BRIDGETT BRUMBAUGH

Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary

Why did you select The Austin Zoo and Sanctuary as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • A few years ago, I came across Austin Zoo on the Internet while looking for rescue organizations in central Texas. I began following the organization on Facebook, continually impressed with the enrichment activities the staff created for the rescued animals. The animals at the zoo are able to celebrate holidays and birthdays, thanks to the creativity of the caretakers. I know the volunteers and staff work for free or minimum pay to enable all funds to be used for the animals.

When I learned that the Zoo has to turn down animals in need due to lack of funds, I knew they needed help. This win gives me the opportunity to help this organization have funds to accept animals in need, improve existing habitats, and buy proper food for the animals in their care. I enjoy seeing animals thrive when they can no longer live in their natural habitat and the Austin Zoo and Sanctuary allows this to happen.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • I give back with time. In law school I began volunteering at local no-kill animal shelters, working as an adoption counselor and caretaker. After graduating, I was given the opportunity to work at a rescue organization in Arizona. I immediately put my belongings in storage and flew out to start helping rescued and abandoned domestic animals. I prefer working hands on with animals, but I do offer pro bono legal services to non-profits when needed.

FONTELLA BATES

Denver Zoo

Why did you select Denver Zoo as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • I chose Denver Zoo because when my children were little we spent a lot of time at the zoo and I like seeing the efforts they are making to preserve our wildlife and the environment.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • My family donates to other causes by giving back time and money to other charitable organizations.

JENNIFER CRUZ

ASPCA

Why did you select ASPCA as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • The reason I chose the ASPCA is because of my dog, Jigga. My boyfriend and I had rescued her during an adoption fundraiser called Broadway Barks where shelters from the Tri-State area try to find forever homes or foster parents for dogs and cats.

Jigga's story touched me so much that I decided to take her home. I'm an animal lover and would want to see dogs and cats find forever homes instead of finding them wandering the streets or being abused by people.

Growing up, I've always had a pet whether it was a school of fish or 2 different types of dogs. For me, they are my companions and would always be there when I didn't have my closest friends around.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • I used to give my time with Girl Scouts when I was younger. Now, I'm in college and working, where I give my time to help patients. I will be taking part in doing the AIDS Walk New York on May 18th. Most of my time I give back to my family in helping out wherever I can.

IFEOMA UDEH

the Jane Goodall Institute

Why did you select the Jane Goodall Institute as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • I selected the Jane Goodall Institute because I support what it stands for and I support the activism of Jane Goodall. The Jane Goodall Institute is giving back to and protecting its natural communities and inhabitants in a unique way that is also important to me. It does not only try to protect its selected environment but also the people who live in it.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • I am a big encourager of giving back and those who give back. I am studying to enter into the medical field and volunteering faithfully is my way of giving back before I finish my studies. I volunteer at the home of the elderly, orphanage and thrift store in my community. I also serve as a mentor to children at risk of dropping out.

MARY FOSTER

Look Good Feel Better

Why did you select Look Good Feel Better as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • Look Good Feel Better is a unique organization that provides women with the tools they need to cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. In the U.S. alone, 50,000 women are helped each year.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • I volunteer with the Lupus Foundation of America DC/Maryland/Virginia chapter.

ROBERT SAKARA

Ocean Conservancy

Why did you select Ocean Conservancy as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • The ocean is very important to the survival of the planet. Hopefully they will use the money to educate the public about pollution of the oceans and also about overfishing of the different fish, shrimp, oysters and other creature in the ocean. It is a beautiful thing to see with sunsets and sun rises and just to walk along the beach.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • We support our church, Columbia City Ballet and the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra which is made up of music students at university.

TOM LOPRESTI

American Red Cross, Baltimore Chapter

Why did you select the American Red Cross, Baltimore Chapter as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • I became familiar with The American Red Cross back in the 80's. At that time they needed someone to write some software for the old XT machines they were using in their South East Pennsylvania chapter. I ended up doing that and then donated some 386 and 486 machines that ran the software a lot faster. I then volunteered to work in the blood room and at blood drives. Eventually I was in charge of scheduling all volunteer activities in the region.

Besides donating time and money to the Red Cross I was a blood and platelet donor. I was closing in on 100 pints of blood and 50 pints of platelets when my doctor had me stop because of my health.

During several of my surgeries the Red Cross gave me some blood back. So it is very important for everyone to donate. I can not think of any organization that does more good work than the ARC.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • Being retired now I occasionally help out with other local charities that have a direct impact on the community such as the food banks and clothing drives with Community Ministries.

LYTY LIM

The YWCA Clark County, WA

Why did you select The YWCA Clark County, WA as your organization and what does it mean to you?

  • I believe in the goals of the YWCA and want to help them achieve them.

  • How else do you participate in giving back?

  • I donate when I am able.
